]]> Sat Nov 7 2009 A Taunton - Bridgwater - Brent Knoll Selection http://charlesgwoodland.fotopic.net/c1774355.html The weather this autumn has been variable and the original forecast for the 28/10 was cloudy, so of course there were blue skies. However the adage sun at 08, cloud by 0930 seemed to apply as on arrival at Creech the clouds had rolled in. But by some fluke the clouds broke and the Skips and RHTT ran in sun. With Eddie the Engine on the Ready Brek Special from Bridgwater a move to Bridgwater and Brent Knoll was in order. ]]> Wed Oct 28 2009 An Autumn Day in South Wales http://charlesgwoodland.fotopic.net/c1774351.html With the promise of a number of Class 60 workings in South Wales and a reasonable weather forecast a trip to South Wales was in order. However there are some things in life that you should never trust, the main one being a good weather forecast! The 27/10 was supposed to be a day where the sun was forecast to shine, but instead was a full cloud day apart from a 2 hour spell of sun. Fortunately the sun shone when within 10 minutes 2 class 60 workings passed CoedKernew. Das Shed put in an appearence once the sun was hidden behind a finger of cloud, which of course was the cue for a number of freights to appear! After leaving Exeter in clear blue skies we reached Bristol to find wet roads and large amounts of Clouds. We should have known better than to trust the Met Office and BBC forecast. After standing in sun it disappeared just before the train arrived and we then experienced full weather, of Sun, Cloud, rain, torrential rain, dull, sun and then more rain. The problem was the sun rarely coincided with the trains! However a good gala So Enjoy! Tuesday 27 October 2009: With the promise of a fine day Bernard Bates and I headed for the GWR. ]]> Sun Oct 11 2009 Dartmoor Railway and 47727 http://charlesgwoodland.fotopic.net/c1760799.html On a weekend when the Westcountryman Rail tour was due to visit Okehampton the Dartmoor Railway found itself with an unwell Thumper No 1132. In order to run its serice they managed to hire 47727 Rebecca from Colas Rail. The loco ran light from Ashford as 0Z47 0849 Ashford - Okehampton on saturday 26-09-09 and on sunday propelled the thumper from Okehampton - Meldon and hauled it back. This gallery is a selection of the images taken. ]]> Sun Sep 27 2009 A Royal Visit http://charlesgwoodland.fotopic.net/c1756415.html On Friday 11th September HRH Prince of Wales made a visit to the South West. After coming down over night 67005 and 67006 were to be found working up the sea wall so the visitors could arrive in Exeter for a trip to the Met Office, before heading to Princetown, Tavistock and then back to Exeter for Evensong. Instead of the usual class 67s, two class 37s made an appearance. 37670 and 37401. In view of the forecast I made the trek to Bathampton and found the shadows could have been a problem, but fortunately not! After a FFCM I made it to Queen Camel where after a few minutes panic with a fast moving cloud a second sunny shot resulted. The weather then collapsed and a full dull with attitude shot at Chetnole resulted. The sun shone while travelling up the Motorway until we reached the Nailsea turn. So the start of the day in South Wales was cloudy, but after the 60 had passed by the sun came out, so rather than drive into the cloud I spent the day at Undy and Severn Tunnel Junction. Unfortunately the light collapsed at 1730. There was a reasonable amount of activity including 66060 hauling 60059 back from Theale. The first stop was Campbell Road and a variety of liners and units appeared in full sun. A quick walk to the Chandlers Ford line saw a shot of 59206 on the Fareham in the bag. The next stop was Millbrook and the day ended at St Denys where I found a set of sets helped get shots of liners heading for Southampton. All in all an excellent day with not a cloud to spoil the fun! In view of the number of people attending FGW decided to operate an intensive service utilising the Class 67s from the Taunton - Cardiff service, (replacing them with a hired in 159, 159009 from SWT) and an HST set. The Class 67s worked Exeter Newton Abbot from 1130 until 2030 apart from one trip which went to Paigton. The weather forecast was not good, it started the week as full dull and wet and end up as a mixed selection. I made the trip to Shaldon Bridge and because the volume of passengers meant that the dwell time was insufficient got both in sun. Off to the Teign estuary found Hugh Dady and I blown out by an errant cloud. The return was in sun, but it was fun trying to hold still in the strong wind. As the weather appeared to be collapsing back to Exeter I went and promptly got blown out by cloud as the trains were late! If they had been on time further sunny shots would have resulted! Off to Clapperbrook LAne produced a sunny shot of the paignton service, before the final shots were obtained in sun at Cockwood, along wit the early running 6A59. 67005 and 67025 did the honours Enjoy! The weekend of the 15/16 August promised a Rail Blue Charter to Paignton with 2 DRS 47s. The sun decided to tease those of us who ventured out, appearing after the train had passed and of course while nothing was running. But some how the sun appeared at Aller for the return. On the Sunday 6024 was due to return to the main line and work the Torbay Express, so imagine the surprise when Ones Skip 67005 had a trip to the seaside. ]]> Sun Aug 9 2009 A South Wales Interlude http://charlesgwoodland.fotopic.net/c1734473.html At the end of July with the Weather Forecasters predicting what passes for summer ( A day when it expected that rain wont fall all day ) I decided to take a trip across the water to South Wales for an interlude of freight action and the load haul tug.... ( No potters wheels were anticipated however ( see http://www.whirligig-tv.co.uk/tv/history/interludes.htm for details)) On arrival at Undy the day started well with a Red team and Green team coal in sun. Of course the weather not to be outdone sent full summer weather my way so 60059 didnt sparking the heavy rain! However the clouds came and went and the odd shot in full sun resulted. One thing I did learn was Class 66s do clag! A quick visit to Coed Kernew did provide any freight but 67025/67005 and 150121 proved the entertainment. As the sun was moving round the rest of the afternoon was spent at Duffryn where a selection of freights was to be had in full sun along with 57313. The final part of the day was spent at Undy where ESQ joined me and a selection freight and units presented themselves in full sun. Having departed early 60059 got held at Lydney so the sun came and went but eventually the beast was photted in milky sun Enjoy! ]]> Tue Jul 28 2009 East for Airshow Specials and Gt Yarmouth drags http://charlesgwoodland.fotopic.net/c1732548.html With the promise of DRS 47s on the Lowestoft Airshow drags and the normal saturday Great Yarmouth drags Steve Gandy and I decided to head East to the flatlands, we were joined by Callum Hayes for these events. With a promising forecast we boldly went in search of locations at Reedham, Haddiscoe, Somerlayton, Lowestoft and Great Yarmouth. What started well went rapidly down hill when the sun decided to sulk and hide away after the first trains. We then suffered torrential rain... before losing the sun just before the train..... On the saturday the same thing occurred sun and cloud with the result being Sun 1 cloud 2. To add insult to injury we stood at the Cattledock braving ladybird infestations to watch the sun come and go before going and then having to watch the 25 min late train roar past us..... on the other line to Acle! The soundtrack on the videos will be interesting.... bleepers anyone? We then suffered the wait to find out if NEX-EA would live up to their reputation of cancelling the drags at the drop of a hat, which of course they did!. So enjoy the shots of a day that promised much and delivered frustration and summer weather in equal measures! The train was hauled by D1015 Western Champion. In typical summers conditions, rain. I got shots of the loco at Creech St Michael, Crowcombe, Washford and approaching Minehead. At Minehead 73141 was named Charlotte by the said member of staff. John Smith then named 66732, and found that under the name was John Smith MD. ]]> Thu Jul 9 2009 Cornwall for the Tractors... (And a 40!) http://charlesgwoodland.fotopic.net/c1718574.html With a David Braine forecast of summer weather Hugh Dady, Callum Hayes and I decided to head into Deepest Cornwall for two Tractor hauled Railtours. However while Spitfire and DRS managed to provide Class 37s, 37087 and 37194. DBS had to substitute 40145. At 0600 the day dawned with clear blue skies, but as normal The adage Sun before 7 cloud by railtour seemed appropriate. We headed west and discovered what generations of photographers knew Cornwall has lots of good up shots for the morning, but is limited on the down. We headed to Brea to lots of vegetation and intermitent sun, but as luck would have it we got sun at the crucial moment. Having managed to get two tours we headed to Chapel for the AXC HST heading for Newquay, we made a dash for Middleway on the return but got done in by a poorly FGW HST. A FFCM to Moorswater followed for a shot of the returning Tractors and some AXC HSTs to and from Newquay. Our final stop was Forder for the class 40 and then 158881 on the Waterloo - Penzance. The climb up the hill sorted out who was fit! Or final shots were of HSTs and Units crossing the viaduct from the lower level to see if we could get a reflection! An excellent day, Enjoy! Rich Sulzmann and I took a trip to Bathampton for the Skips and the Pengham - Theale, we got a shot of 60163 at Pilning, and explored the area around Charfield for some additional shots. 67002 was photographed at Charfield and had it run to its booked path 60074 would have been nice at an occupation bridge near Huntingsford, instead due to shadows we ended up back at Charfield and finished the day at BAthampton Saturday 30 May 2009: As the forecast was good and there were a number of things happening in the Bristol and surrounding Area.
